Make a household plan in one evening
Everyone at home should know the answers. Write them down, because a plan on a dead phone is no plan at all.
Choose your contacts
- An out-of-town contact, far enough away not to be affected by the same event. Ask them first.
- A local contact who could reach you or your home.
- Make sure everyone at home has both numbers and email addresses.
Choose where you'd meet
- One place close by, like a library or community centre.
- One place outside your neighbourhood.
- Only go when it's safe.
Know your way out
- Agree on a main and an alternate way out of your home, and walk them once.
- In an apartment or condo, plan a way out that doesn't use the elevator, and tell property management if you may need help.
- Decide who would take your pets. Reception centres often accept only service animals.
If phones aren't working well
- Try a text first. Texts can get through when calls can't, though nothing is guaranteed.
- Make sure everyone at home can send one.
- You can't currently text 911. In an emergency, call.
Keep it current
- Check your kit and your plan twice a year, for example when the clocks change.
In an emergency, call 911. WeVenture isn't an emergency service.
This guide is a plain summary of official advice, not a guarantee, and no single plan fits every home. Follow local officials in a real emergency.
